Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons warm water (bathtub water or warmer)
  • ¾ cup oat milk
  • ½ teaspoon matcha
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract optional
  • ½-1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey optional (or any sweetener of your choice)

Instructions

  • Heat your oat milk. You can do this in the microwave, by heating it in a heat resistance glass or mug for 45 seconds, then heating again for 45 seconds, repeating until it is warmed to your satisfaction.
You can also heat it on the stove top over a medium to low heat for approximately 5 minutes. You will want your oat milk to simmer, but never boil. If it does boil, remove from heat.
  • While your oat milk is heating, combined the matcha powder with the warm water (think bathtub water or hotter). Froth or whisk the matcha with the warm water until the mixture is not grainy, approx. 30-60 seconds.
Tip: Use a glass or mug to do this, so the matcha does not spill over the sides of the glass while whisking or frothing.
  • Once the oat milk is warmed, froth it. See my notes below for tips on how to froth it oat milk.
  • Next, add vanilla extract and maple syrup into the oat milk and mix or froth until combined.
  • Add into a mug (if it is not already in one) and pour in the matcha. Mix once more to combine the matcha and the oat milk mixture.

How To Froth Oat Milk

While this is not required in any way for your recipe, it definitely adds a nice little touch. It also will make this feel more like the “real deal” from a coffee shop.
The easiest way to froth oat milk is to use a handheld frother. I use a handheld frother from Zulays, but any handheld frother will do (pro tip- order batteries). It was really affordable, and I use it often. If you make lattes at home or plan to, I recommend getting one.
If you do not have a handheld frother,  you may also use a blender.  Simply add the oat milk to the blender, and blend for 20 seconds.
Just make sure to leave the top portion of the blender slightly open and cover it with a towel because if you seal it tight, the hot oat milk will explode.

Substitutions

My preference for oat milk is that is creamy. I find that this makes my latte taste better. Willa’s is my go-to for oat milk, as they do not have additives or gums and their milk is all-natural.
Matcha - I use ceremonial matcha from Tenzo but any matcha will do. Trader Joe also has an affordable one. Be sure you are buying matcha and not matcha latte powder.
Vanilla Extract - I add vanilla extract to add more flavor up the latte and add some flavor. You may use any flavoring you like, such as coffee syrups.
If you enjoy sweeter lattes, you can add in your favorite sweetener. I prefer to use maple syrup in mine, but sugar, stevia, or any other sweetener works just as well.
If you prefer a stronger latte, double the amount of matcha. Do keep in mind you will need to add more sweetener if you do this.
You can also the matcha and milk to cool, add ice cubes and enjoy this vegan latte iced!

Time Saving Hacks & Storing

This latte is best served right away. There are not many hacks to cut time on this unless you want to drink this matcha oat milk latte chilled.
If so, simply  make the matcha ahead of time, then when you are ready, add the matcha, oat milk and ice into a glass and enjoy.

Add Ons

Summer - Ice this latte to make a refreshing, light energy-boosting treat!
Fall - I always love warm spices in the summer. Add in some brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg or pumpkin spice!
Winter - Peppermint Mocha Matcha latte, anyone? Add in 1-2 tbsp of cocoa powder or melted chocolate and some peppermint drops (or candy canes, why not!) then mix it up.
Spring - Adding a little lavender extract to this latte makes it the ultimate spring drink.
Also, adding 1 tsp of turmeric will make this vegan latte anti-inflammatory!
