    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Equally as creamy as the original. Thanks to thick and creamy coconut milk, this non dairy version of Starbucks Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam is just as thick and creamy as versions made with whole milk. No need to miss out on delicious flavor when making vegan cold foam.
    • Customizable. Make this sweet cream vegan cold foam as sweet as you'd like!
    • 5 different ways to make! Just like my Pumpkin Cold Foam, you can make this vanilla sweet cream cold foam with a handheld frother, blender, food processor, standard whisk, or electric mixer. Virtually everyone will be able to make this vegan cold foam in their home kitchen.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

All ingredients for dairy free cold foam in individual bowls
    • Full fat coconut milk - Make sure to use full fat canned coconut milk instead of refrigerated coconut milk. It is much thicker and higher in fat and is perfect for making thick, non dairy vanilla sweet cream cold foam. If you can't find canned coconut milk, the next best option would be a can of full fat coconut cream.
    • Oat milk - Besides coconut milk, oat milk is one of the best creamy plant milks you can use. Oat milk is used in this dairy free cold cream to add a tiny bit of liquid to the cold foam to help it cream together. Use any leftover oat milk to make my Oat Milk Hot Chocolate, Oat Milk Matcha Latte or Creamy Iced Oat Milk Latte.
    • Maple syrup - Starbucks makes their sweet cream cold foam with vanilla syrup, but I make mine at home with maple syrup because I always have it in the pantry. If desired, you can use another liquid sweetener like agave, vanilla syrup (if you have it!) or even my Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup for a comforting fall twist.
    • Salt - It may seem odd to add salt to a sweet, vegan cold foam, but it's important to balance the sweetness and the fat with a bit of salt! It's just like finishing a batch of cookies off with a sprinkle of salt.

    Step by Step Instructions

Before getting started, check to make sure your canned coconut milk is cold enough. There should be a thick, hard layer of coconut cream on the top of the can.

If needed, place the can of coconut milk in the refrigerator for at least an hour to harden the coconut cream. If the coconut milk is not hard enough, you will have a difficult time whipping the coconut milk into a thick and creamy vegan cold foam.

Two pictures in a collage showing how t make diary free cold foam my placing all ingredients into a glass and frothing
    1. Place ingredients into a bowl. Make sure the bowl is large enough - the vanilla sweet cream cold foam ingredients are going to expand as they get light, fluffy and airy!
    2. Froth until light and creamy! Using a froth, electric mixer, or whisk is going to produce the best results, but you can also make vegan cold foam this with a food processor or a blender.
    3. Pour dairy free cold foam over iced or cold brew coffee. For an extra indulgent drink, top the vegan cold foam with cinnamon or drizzle with caramel, chocolate or any other syrup you love.

    FAQs

Is cold foam the same as whipped cream?

Although similar, cold foam and whipped cream are not the same exact thing. Whipped cream is typically thicker and will hold its shape. Cold foam is essentially the cold version of steamed, frothy milk that is made to put in lattes and cappuccinos.

How long does cold foam last?

Dairy free cold foam is best served right away, but it can be refrigerated for a couple hours, if needed. If you do refrigerate it, you may need to refroth it with your frother of choice before enjoying it again.

Can cold foam go on hot drinks?

Cold foam was created to top cold brew and other iced coffees, but there's no rules saying you can't use it to top a hot drink. It will melt into a hot coffee quickly, so keep that in mind.

    Expert Tips

    • Choose a good brand of coconut milk. I gave this same tip in my Pumpkin Cold Foam post and wanted to reiterate it here because not all brands of coconut milk are made the same and it's especially important to choose a good brand when you're planning to whip it into cold foam.
In no particular order, I recommend the following brands of coconut milk:
      - Whole Foods 365
      - Native Forest's Classic Organic Coconut Milk

      - Savoy
      - Nature's Charm Coconut Whipping Cream (this one is made for whipping into dreamy creams but it does contain sugar. If using, skip the maple syrup to start and adjust sweetness to taste).

Coconut milk brands I do not recommend for making cold foam:
      - Trader Joe's
      - Thai Kitchen
    • Double check that the coconut milk is COLD before starting. If it is not cold, you're going to have a hard time making the vegan cold foam light and fluffy.
    • Use unsweetened oat milk. Oat milk is already a naturally sweet plant milk. If you use a sweetened oat milk, omit the maple syrup and only add more to taste if desired.

    Notes

    Coconut Milk
-You must use the more solidified portion of the full fat coconut milk from a can.
-If your coconut milk appear to be grainy at all, that is OK. Because it is made from coconut and water, it can separate. Simply froth it by itself before adding the additional ingredients.
-If your coconut milk is too hard on the top and the froth cannot whisk through it, use a blender or food processor to break it down.

    Storage
-This cold foam is best served right away. You can refrigerate it for up to 2 hours, but you likely will need to froth it again, as the coconut milk with solidify.
    -I do not recommend freezing.

Can you use sweetened condensed coconut milk and almond milk instead of the suggested coconut milk and oat milk?

I have not tried coconut condensed milk. Almond milk will work, but unless is barista blend, it wont froth as well. If you try condensed milk, please let me know how it turns out!
