WHAT ARE SLUTTY BROWNIES?
So what exactly makes these brownies "slutty"? Well, there's some debate.
Some say it's because they're so indulgent and rich, others say it's because they're easy to make and don't require much effort and others say it is because of the layers!
Whatever the reason, Slutty Brownies are a sensation and a must-try dessert for anyone with a sweet tooth.
INGREDIENTS AND SUBSTITUTIONS
Oreos - Oreos are a vegans best kept secret. Use regular sized Oreos (not the thins). You can always get creative and substitute with different flavors, such as the Halloween colored Oreos or mint - just make sure it is still vegan!
Butter - In order to make these brownies both dairy-free and vegan, I used dairy free butter sticks. I always recommend vegan butter sticks, such as Miyoko's Creamery or any block butter for baking because spreads can have air whipped into them.
Sugar - This recipe uses both cane sugar and brown sugar. To ensure your cookies are vegan, make sure to use organic sugar. Conventional sugars can be bleached with non-vegetarian ingredients.
Flour - Both all-purpose flour and Bob's Red Mill gluten-free cup for cup blend will work.
Milk - Any unsweetened plant-based milk will work. I personally find oat or almond works the best when baking.
Dairy Free Chocolate Chips - Make sure to use dairy free or vegan chocolate chips! I like to use Enjoy Life.
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
- Begin by making both the brownie and cookie dough separately. To make the cookie dough, combine the all of the dry ingredients, other than the chocolate chips, in a bowl.
- Once combined, add in the wet ingredients and continue to mix until a soft dough forms.
- Then, gently fold in the chocolate chips using a spatula. Be careful not to overmix or the batter will become tough and the texture will be off.
- Using a separate bowl, begin making the brownie batter. Combine all of the dry ingredients into a bowl.
- Once combined, add in the wet ingredients and continue to mix until a soft dough forms.
- Then, gently fold in the chocolate chips using a spatula. The batter will be on the thicker side, so you may need to use your hands to combine the chocolate chips into the batter.
- Once both batters are formed, grease a 9x13 casserole dish.
- Add the cookie dough to the bottom layer and smooth out with your hand so it is one even layer.
- Next, add a layer off Oreos directly on top of the cookie dough.
- Finally, add the brownie layer on top of the Oreos. Because the brownie batter is slightly thicker, you will likely need to use your hand to even it out.
- Add to the oven and bake for 20 minutes. The dish may not seem completely cooked when you remove it - that is OK! Let it sit for at least 10 minutes before cutting into it. For best results when cutting, run your clean knife under hot water before each cut.
STORAGE
These slutty brownies will stay fresh for up to 7 days in an air tight container in a cool, dry place. If your kitchen runs on the warmer side (mine does in the summer!) store the bars in the refrigerator and allow them to warm up for 10 minutes before eating them.
You can freeze these slutty brownies for up to one month in a freezer safe bag or container. You may also freeze the cookie dough batter and the brownie batter in a freezer safe bag, separately, prior to making the treats for up to two months.
